Atlas Has Had a Rough Few Days

2022-10-11

Atlas has had a rough few days. Fluctuating high fever, two ER visits. We now think it’s a throat infection which antibiotics should resolve. But today was hard. Hazel and I had to restrain him for an hour while he was in absolute fear, crying “nonono” nonstop through the tests, watching staff poke three needles and take vials of blood, forcing swabs in his nose and depressors down his mouth, poking in his ears, ripping adhesive off his genitals. At the end of it, somehow he still managed a small wave and a “bye-bye” for the nurses. Their job is one I couldn’t do. And Atlas, every single night for months now, I get a craving around 8-9pm, which I just barely resist, to wake him up, take him out of his crib, hug him and tell him how wonderful he is. I go to bed thinking he’s the best person I’ve ever laid eyes on, every day. I don’t resist the bias, and I don’t think it’s far from the truth. Aside from being sick he exceeds every hope I ever had for him.
