COVID-19 is a big deal because of potential exponential growth, localized outbreaks overwhelming regional facilities, and the long-term prospect of another disease in the world routinely killing hundreds of thousands of people a year the way the regular old flu that half of us don’t bother to vaccinate against does. We take it so seriously because we have a possibility of getting it under control before it takes hold, not because of the death toll so far.
