Where I Stand: Seven Opinions
2025-04-20
These are always interesting. I consistently end up in the middle having a few bones to pick with any platform. I suspect it’s due to feeling too ill-informed to take a bold stance on a lot of questions. I continue to ponder how the Green Party is always rated marginally less progressive than the NDP though… My strongest-held ill-informed opinions: 1) globalism is wonderful. The degradation of global trade is catastrophic to peace and prosperity worldwide. Think on a global scale. “Canada first” is short-sighted and selfish. 2) we should bolster our energy industry. Nuclear especially, and oil too to the extent we can do it more responsibly than competitors before that resource declines in global demand. 3) we should tax carbon, even if it undermines #2. You only get to operate here if you’re incentivised to do it cleaner, innovate, and fund environmental efforts. The tragedy of politics is evidently you have to drop this principle to get elected and do the rest, but that’s unfortunate. 4) as long as rich people exist, people can say “the rich should pay a little bit more”. You need hard numbers to have this debate, no “fair share” talk. 5) the best way to save the environment is to remove ourselves from it. Consolidation and efficiency. That means GMOs, urban housing, and industrial scale farming are our friend. 6) We have, and should continue to, rely on the US for military support. It might not work out, but I see no other path to success, especially an economical one. Things have to blow over with Trump first, but I expect they will before we could turn things around with our military anyways. 7) we should fund more dental, vision, etc services. I’m less interested in funding addiction services on compassionate grounds, but if you can make an argument based on return on investment I’m all ears SHARE.VOTECOMPASS.COM My Vote Compass Results - 2025 Canadian federal election
